Snow day, delay, or early dismissal?
When bad weather hits, schools make one of three calls, and each one changes your day differently. Here's what they mean.
The three weather calls
- Closure (snow day): school is closed for the day. No classes, no buses.
- Delay (usually 2 hours): school still happens but starts late, so roads can clear. Buses run about two hours later.
- Early dismissal: school opens normally but sends students home early as conditions worsen.
How schools decide
Districts weigh road conditions, the forecast, and whether buses can run safely, usually deciding early in the morning and announcing by a set time. A call can also change: a delay can become a closure, or a normal day can turn into an early dismissal.
